Hours after Mobile County officials publicly accused the city of skipping rent at Government Plaza, Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said he has ordered back payments at its old lease rate, adding that he is looking at other options.

Cheriogotis responded to the claims Monday evening during one of his first-ever press conferences since becoming Mobile’s chief executive, explaining the non-payments were due to what he understood was an ongoing negotiation on costs following a rent hike from about $1.5 million to closer to $3 million per year.
