CHAUVIN, La. — A Terrebonne Parish family lost nearly everything when their house caught fire on Sunday, and the bayou community is coming together to help them replace what they lost — including the children's Christmas presents.
"We had to kick in the door," said Megan Hendon as she walked through what's left of her home on Highway 56 in Chauvin.
"The floors were brown and now they're black. You can see the TV screen melted off onto the floor. Everything is black," Hendon said.
Sunday morning around 11 a.m., Hendon's house caught fire. Her neighbor Kathy Menser captured cellphone video of the blaze.
"When I came outside I saw the smoke just rolling and rolling. It was horrible. It really broke my heart. This is such a beautiful family. They are amazing," Menser said.
