New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said on Monday that he will leave his rent-controlled apartment in Queens and move into the official mayor's residence in Manhattan once he takes office on January 1. Mamdani, who won last month's election by a wide margin, confirmed he will live at Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side.
The mansion, more than 10,000 square feet and overlooking the East River, was built in 1799 and has served as the mayor's residence since 1942.
Mayors are not required to live there, which led to questions about whether Mamdani -- who centred his campaign on affordability and the city's housing struggles -- would remain in his modest two-bedroom Queens apartment. Most mayors before him have chosen the mansion, except former mayor Michael Bloomberg.
