A paraglider in his 60s died after crashing into the mountainside near Makapuu this afternoon, according to Honolulu first responders.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call at about 2:18 p.m. reporting that a paraglider had struck the Koolaus about 150 yards above Kalanianaole Highway.

Makapuu Point is a popular launch spot for paragliders for its sweeping view of the coastline.

When firefighters reached the paraglider, he was not breathing and had no pulse, according to HFD.

HFD airlifted him to a landing zone at Sandy Beach at about 3:30 p.m., where Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics were waiting.

EMS assisted with the death pronouncement. EMS estimated his age at about 68 years old.
