MANCHESTER, N.H. —

The holidays are approaching quickly, and the excitement of gift-giving can sometimes overshadow safety and quality, especially when it comes to children's toys.

Consumer Reports is sharing new guidance to help families choose safe, age-appropriate toys this season.

"We looked for toys designed for open-ended, repeat play, developmentally targeted, and safe, for specific ages," said Siobhan Adcock of Consumer Reports.

For babies, a play gym or activity mat is a good place to start. New mom Nicole Guerrero said her son loves his Baby Einstein mat.

"It's really colorful and durable," she said.

Consumer Reports recommends reading labels carefully to make sure a toy matches a child's age and developmental level.
