Immigration lawyers say Afghan men who had been checking in regularly with U.S. authorities are now being detained in growing numbers after last month’s shooting of two National Guard soldiers near the White House, according to a new Associated Press report.
The crackdown comes on top of earlier moves to halt Afghan immigration processing in the wake of the attack.
Why It Matters
The shooting of two West Virginia National Guard members in downtown Washington on November 26 by the suspect, Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal , has already triggered sweeping reviews of how Afghans were vetted and admitted to the U.S. under Operation Allies Welcome, the Joe Biden-era program that brought roughly 76,000 people to safety after the fall of Kabul.
