Veterans, dignitaries and community members gathered at Pearl Harbor on Sunday to mark the 84th anniversary of the surprise attack that pulled the United States into World War II.
This year marked a bittersweet milestone for those in attendance as for the first time there were no survivors present for the commemoration of the Japanese Imperial Navy’s Dec. 7, 1941, attack. Though no survivors attended in person, some watched the ceremony on a livestream from the mainland.
“Their absence is felt profoundly,” said Pearl Harbor National Memorial superintendent Tom Leatherman in remarks during the ceremony. “To those who may be watching afar on our livestream: we honor you, we remember you, and we thank you.”
