In June, John Joseph was unwell.

“I was about 70 pounds overweight” with diabetes, and high cholesterol and blood pressure. His liver was in rough shape, and he had “no ambition, no drive, no energy,” he told The Hamilton Spectator.

The doctor told him he was at risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

Joseph had already seen the toll diabetes can have on someone — his father ended up needing a leg amputation.

So following Joseph’s grim checkup, he committed himself to his health. He put himself on a “stringent diet,” throwing away all the sugar in his house.

But for a “foodie” like Joseph, his new reality got depressing quickly, especially when trying to find a restaurant.

“You look at their menus and you’re, like, ‘OK, I can’t go there. I can’t go there.’”
