A student is dead, another is critically injured and a suspect is in custody after a shooting at Kentucky State University on Dec. 9, local police announced.
Frankfort, Kentucky, police said they responded to reports of a shooting at the school at about 3:35 p.m. local time. The two victims were taken to a local hospital where one died and the other is "in stable but critical condition." The suspect in custody was not a student.
Police said in a statement late on Dec. 9 the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no active threat.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the shooting was not a "random incident" and suggested it started following an argument.
"This was not a mass shooting or a random incident," Beshear said in a video message at about 6 p.m. local time,"The suspected shooter is already in custody. That means that while this was scary, there is no ongoing threat and I believe our families are safe."
The Democratic governor asked for prayers in response to the shooting: "Pray for those that have been injured… Pray for a world where these things don’t happen and I’ll keep trying to build the Kentucky that we don’t see arguments end in violence."
Kentucky State University is a school of about 2,200 students and 450 faculty and staff members. The school located in the state capital was founded in 1886. Frankfort is located between Louisville and Lexington.
