When 26-year-old Londoner Owen Turcotte began playing Magic: The Gathering, he never thought he would become a national champion.

Turcotte recently participated in Canada’s regional championship in Calgary, winning 17 matches en route to a US$5,000 cash prize as well as receiving invitations to the pro tour and the world championship next year.

“It’s unbelievable (winning the tournament). It’s pretty exciting. It’s definitely hit me by now, but it took a couple of days,” Turcotte said.
