An hour before Alina Masud was to be laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery on Thorold Townline Road Saturday, the service was abruptly halted.
Masud, an 18-year-old Brock University student, died in a crash on Highway 406 three days earlier.
On Dec. 3, she was thrown from the car she as travelling in and was struck by a passing vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.
Imam Asad Mahmood of Mosque Aisha in downtown Thorold said the young woman’s grieving family was at first thankful their daughter would be buried near their Thorold home.
“Her father cried and said, ‘I will be able to see her everyday. I will be able to pray for her,’” Mahmood said.
But Saturday morning as her grave was being excavated, workers were told to stop, Mahmood said.
