The Eastern District of Virginia, an area that includes all of Hampton Roads and boasts some 6 million residents, finds itself in legal limbo. A federal judge concluded in late November that the active U.S. attorney for the district, Lindsey Halligan, was unlawfully appointed — though she apparently continues to serve in that role.

On Monday, the DOJ issued an extraordinary statement attacking federal judges who criticized the department last week for continuing to include Halligan on DOJ court filings. Attorney General Pam Bondi has not appealed the ruling about Halligan’s appointment. But, on Monday, she found time to belittle the judiciary rather than handle this matter in the courts.
