SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A new first-of-its-kind pediatric emergency department at Sanford will be opening next month.

It’s located right at the USD Medical Center, adjacent to the existing emergency room.

Officials say the department was much needed and will help get kids seen faster in emergencies.

This space is a first for South Dakota and is only meant for children.

“I think this is going to be critical for our pediatric population. But we don’t talk enough about how much this is going to impact our adult popoulation. Wait times in the emergency department now we have this dedicated space just for kids. So, we are going to be able to get our adults in alot quicked, our pediatric patients a lot quicker. An overall win, and big day in Sioux Falls.” said Erin Sanderson, S
