The bitter blast of Arctic air that swept across New Jersey late Monday and early Tuesday pushed temperatures down into the single digits in at least 15 towns and cities.

One town in Sussex County — Sandyston — reported a bone-chilling low of zero degrees, and one was even colder. Walpack, also in Sussex, notched a low of 2 degrees below zero, according to temperature data from the Rutgers NJ Weather Network .

As cold as it was Tuesday morning, only one weather reporting station in our region set a new record low for Dec. 9. That was Trenton Mercer Airport in Ewing, which saw the mercury dip to 11 degrees.
