Paws and Whiskers, Toledo’s only nonprofit feline, no-kill shelter, has had to turn away homeless cats because it is frequently at full capacity.
“We are ready for an expansion,” said Tawny Arnold, the shelter’s executive director. “Not only are we ready, but the community’s needs are a lot larger.”
The shelter, at 32 Hillwyck Dr. in Toledo, has had to deny a lot of stray cats and owner surrenders over the years because of a growing cat population.
“When we’re at full capacity — 150 cats — we can’t take any more. Every single day we’re getting dozens of emails and applications for intake that we unfortunately have to deny,” she said.
That’s about to change, as the shelter will be moving into a much larger facility next year.
The current building, which opened in October, 1996, is 5,00
