The Christmas Ships parades on both the Willamette and Columbia rivers have been canceled for Tuesday night due to safety concerns related to the large amounts of debris in the water.
That’s thanks to the atmospheric river that has dumped several inches of rain and caused some area flooding in northwest Oregon and western Washington. The ships will return to their schedule, “as soon as it is safe to do so,” the group wrote on its Instagram page .
The Christmas Ships have sailed the Willamette and Columbia rivers around Portland and surrounding communities since 1954. The fleet comprises small boats decorated with Christmas lights for the season. Over the decades, the lighted boat parade has grown to include some 70 boats.
