The Penguins were one-tenth of a second from their 15th win of the season. Then one of the strangest plays of the hockey season sent them to overtime with the Ducks instead.

Despite being shorthanded, the Ducks broke out on a rush. Beckett Sennecke was jostling for the puck, and it squirted towards the Pittsburgh goal. Erik Karlsson hit the ice in front of the net. In an attempt to sweep the puck out of harm’s way, he instead pushed it past goalie Arturs Silovs with his hand.

Sennecke was credited with the goal that tied the score at 3 with a single tick on the clock remaining.

The game proceeded to a shootout. And Penguins fans knew immediately how that was going to go. They lost their fifth of the season — the fourth with Silovs in goal — and dropped to 14-7-7 on the season.
