INDIANAPOLIS — Leaders with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say they are ready for when officers begin working 10-hour shifts on Jan. 3, a change from the current 8.5-hour schedule.

Officers will rotate between five days on, three days off and four days on, four days off, which union representatives say gives more time off annually for the same amount of working hours.

IMPD officers voted to approve the schedule change in September after unanimous support from IMPD district commanders and the Fraternal Order of Police executive board.

"I'm excited to try something new that that I think will benefit both our community and our cops," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said. "Our officers, this generation, demands something different, and so we listened."
