MARQUETTE — The Calumet Copper Kings and L’Anse Purple Hornets bowling teams opened their season Saturday in Marquette, in an Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference meet.
The Purple Hornets dropped all three of their matchups in the first shift, with the boys falling to Ishpeming/Negaunee, 37-3, the girls falling 30-10, and the X team falling 40-0.
In the second shift, the Calumet boys defeated Menominee 35-5, while the girls won by forfeit. The X team lost to Westwood, 36-4.
In high school bowling, schools field a boys team, a girls team, and an X team, which can be comprised of both boys and girls.
Teams bowl six baker games, where five bowlers each bowl two frames of one game. Typically, that means the first bowler takes the first and sixth frames, the second bowler gets the second and
