UK households can switch energy providers without paying a fee even if you’re locked into a fixed contract under a big rule change. Customers are typically asked to pay between £25 to £50 per fuel for a one year fix, if they leave their contract early.

But Compare The Market says customers can leave your contract without getting charged. Tom Lyons, energy expert at the price comparison site, said many are unaware that suppliers can’t charge any exit fees in the last 49 days of your contract.

He explained: “It’s worth checking your bill to see what type of contract you’re on which is typically displayed on the paper bill or online account dashboard.”
