MCFARLAND, Wis. (WKOW) — Steve Emt and Laura Dwyer each experienced life-altering mid-life moments.
"My crash was in 1995, so I'm going on 31 years," Emt said.
The car crash was a result of Emt drinking and driving. It left him paralyzed from the waist down — changing his life, but not ruining it.
"When I became paralyzed 13 years ago, it was freak accident," Dwyer said.
A tree branch fell on Dwyer when she was working as a landscaper, resulting in catastrophic injuries.
"I woke up paralyzed in the hospital, and I was like, oh, what am I gonna do?" she said.
"I had so many questions," Emt said. "I didn't know what the Paralympics were."
Emt and Dwyer eventually answered their questions with curling — a sport they knew nothing about before they were each confined to a wheelchair
