A woman who attempted to murder a toddler by repeatedly administering adult medication has been sentenced to prison, with the judge branding her actions as "utterly wicked". Laura Docherty gave antidepressant and painkilling drugs to the young girl, leading to the child needing resuscitation and ventilation due to the sustained abuse.
Docherty, 35, denied the charge of attempted murder at the High Court in Edinburgh but was unanimously found guilty by a jury. Following her conviction, the judge described the evidence presented during her trial as "deeply troubling and truly shocking".
Judge Michael O'Grady KC noted that parts of the evidence suggested Docherty had led "a troubled and unhappy life", adding: "No doubt at least some of that will not be of your making."
