Provincial police are again reminding sledders to double-check ice conditions on Northern inland lakes before heading out on machines following the death of a 76-year-old man near North Bay.

Police said a local man was pronounced dead in hospital Monday after rescuers pulled him from Bay Lake near the Town of Latchford.

The victim had been riding with two other sledders when two of the three machines went through the ice around 3 p.m., a provincial news release said.

Another rider who had also been trapped in the water survived, police said.

"All outdoor enthusiasts (should) exercise extreme caution when travelling on frozen waterways," the OPP news release said.

"Ice conditions can be unpredictable, and checking ice thickness before venturing out is essential."
