Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said that the Constitution guarantees the Election Commission to prepare the electoral rolls, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is the responsibility of the Election Commission. Refuting the allegations of opposition on SIR during the discussion on the Election Reform in the Lok Sabha today, Mr Shah alleged that the opposition, especially the Congress, has spread lies on the SIR issue and is tarnishing the image of the country, government and Election Commission. Replying to the discussion, the Home Minister said, SIR is the purification of the electoral rolls. He said, the first SIR was conducted in the year 1952 when Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister. He said that, after 2004, the SIR exercise has now been undertaken
