With his new gig, Tony Dokoupil may be able to hit snooze on his early bird alarm clock.
The Emmy Award-winning TV journalist and CBS News staple has been named the anchor of "CBS Evening News," CBS announced in a statement on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Dokoupil's appointment comes after the 2024 departure of anchor Norah O'Donnell, who'd held the position since 2019.
Dokoupil, who'd been cohosting "CBS Mornings" alongside Gayle King and Nate Burleson since 2019, will make the shift over to "Evening News" on Jan. 5, 2026, the network shared.
In his new role, Dokoupil, 44, will "get out from behind the anchor desk and meet with viewers in cities and towns across America," CBS announced.
"We live in a time in which many people have lost trust in the media. Tony Dokoupil is the person to win it back," CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss said in a statement.
"He believes in old-school journalistic values: asking the hard questions, following the facts wherever they lead and holding power to account," Weiss continued. "Americans hungry for fairness will see that on display night after night."
Dokoupil, who joined CBS News in 2016, has anchored several major news events during his nearly decadelong tenure, such as the Oct. 7 terror attack in Israel, the papal conclave in Rome and the Jan. 6 insurrection in Washington, D.C. He's also interviewed A-list stars including Dolly Parton, Harry Styles, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Stiller.
"After 20 years in journalism, traveling through all 50 states and talking with people in hundreds of far-flung American places, I realize why a country this big needs a show this ambitious," Dokoupil said in a statement. "The strength of our nation is that we benefit from fair reporting and the open discussion of all ideas.
"For more than 60 years, the 'Evening News' has been a bedrock of that process. I'm honored to join a fearless team at this important moment and with what I can promise is a commitment to trust and the plain truth."
"CBS Evening News" airs weekdays at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS and also streams on Paramount+.
