Baltimore City Public Schools is considering closing three charter schools by summer 2026.

One of them is the Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys, which takes in male students behind in reading and math between grades 4 and 8.

The school district cites poor academic performance as the main reason for recommending the school’s closure.

Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys CEO Edwin Avent told WBAL’s T.J. Smith that the issue is more nuanced.

“We’re doing our best to try and move and advance these boys. But nonetheless, we understand where they’re coming from,” Avent said. “We understand their situation. We understand their economically disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Avent added that the charter school is making a difference in the boys’ lives.
