Things happen quickly in the college football offseason, folks.

After reports surfaced Wednesday afternoon that Penn State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles would not be retained on new head coach Matt Campbell’s staff, he’s now expected to be hired as the Tennessee defensive coordinator. Tennessee fired defensive coordinator Tim Banks earlier in the week.

ESPN, CBS Sports and On3 each were on the news.

The reported shift in Knowles’ situation happened in a matter of minutes.

Penn State and now-fired coach James Franklin brought Knowles to Happy Valley this offseason on a deal worth more than $3 million annually. It was a dogged pursuit, having to pry him away from Ohio State after a national championship. He was with the Buckeyes for three years.
