Pope Leo XIV expressed concern Tuesday that President Donald Trump is endangering the “very important alliance” between the United States and Europe.

After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome, Leo told reporters that Trump’s proposal to end the Ukraine-Russia war marked a “huge change” that could fracture the long-standing transatlantic partnership.

The American pope has called for a ceasefire and urged Russia in particular to make gestures to promote peace.

“The remarks that were made about Europe also in interviews recently, I think, are trying to break apart what I think needs to be a very important alliance today and in the future,” Leo said.
