ASHLAND, Wis. (Northern News Now) - Ashland school leaders and advocates are urging for transparency when it comes to your property taxes that are directed to education. They say public funds generated from taxes often end up at private schools.
The Ashland School District wants taxpayers to know exactly how much of their property tax dollars are funding private school vouchers, a price tag already soaring into the hundreds of thousands each year, and it’s expected to climb even higher next year.
In Wisconsin, districts forward local levy money to private schools when parents apply through the state’s voucher program.
Superintendent for Ashland schools, Rob Prater says about 11% of the Ashland levy goes to private-school students using the vouchers.
