Viewers tuning Channel 5 's recent period drama The Forsytes might be unfamiliar with its beloved predecessor, The Forsyte Saga. Even though over 20 years have passed since it first graced our screens, enthusiasts of the genre still heap praise on this sweeping multigenerational tale.

The new programme functions as a prequel and "reimagining" of the Nobel Prize-winning novels crafted by John Galsworthy. The Forsyte Saga, a 10-part ITV miniseries, follows the scandals across three generations of a socially ambitious family from the 1870s through to the roaring twenties. At its heart stands Damian Lewis , who delivers a "constant marvel" of a performance as Soames Forsyte, the unlikable protagonist.
