BOISE, Idaho — An Idaho wildland firefighter who suffered a traumatic brain injury when a tree struck him while fighting a wildfire is returning home Monday following more than a year of recovery.
Justin Shaw was injured in August 2024 when a burning tree fell on him, striking him multiple times and throwing him into the flames, while he fought the Coffee Can Saddle Fire in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest in North Idaho.
Shaw's crew pulled him from the fire and performed life-saving measures before he was transported for treatment.
Shaw suffered severe injuries , including a traumatic brain injury with CTE, communication difficulties, left-eye blindness, right-eye optic nerve damage, a pulmonary embolism and facial fractures. As KTVB previously reported , despite the chal
