After a 49-point beatdown of the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Cup quarterfinals Wednesday, it's not hyperbolic to say the Oklahoma City Thunder are having the greatest regular season ever.
Not only did they move to 24-1 on the season, matching the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors for the best start through 25 games in NBA history, they did it while advancing in a tournament that didn't exist when those Warriors went 73-9 to set the record for most wins in a season. And as we all know, those Warriors failed to cap their historic season with a title. The Thunder still have a chance to capture two.
An NBA Cup title isn't as prestigious as an NBA Finals championship, but it's still a precious stone for OKC to add to this season's infinity gauntlet. A stone the Thunder seem well on their way to capturing with the way they've been dominating teams en route to a 79-3 pace. Since opening the season with two double-overtime wins, the Thunder captured 17 of their last 22 wins by double digits.
With the NBA's best net rating by almost seven points, the Thunder have a plus-17.5 average point margin on the season. MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander barely has to touch the floor in fourth quarters. Oh, and did I mention they're currently on a 17-game winning streak?
Call me a prisoner of the moment, but it's hard imagining a team beating these Thunder when they show up the way they have so far. This isn't your typical defending champion just trying to get through the regular season. The Thunder know there's history to be made, so they're chasing it... and they're young enough to capture that history and keep going.
So, can the Thunder top the Warriors for best record all-time? Of course, it'd be foolish to doubt them now. But don't stop there. They can break the record and do what the Warriors couldn't. Finish the season with another championship. That would make this the greatest season ever.
Sherrone Moore is done in Michigan
Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday for allegedly engaging in an improper relationship with a staff member. Later Wednesday, Moore was in police custody for an alleged assault.
There isn't much more to add to this yet, as the story is still developing, but it's obviously a blow to Michigan just two years removed from a national championship and the departure of former coach Jim Harbaugh, who left in a cloud of his own controversies.
Biff Poggi was named the Wolverines' interim coach for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31, but as for who should take over the program permanently, FTW's Charles Curtis has a list of five names Michigan could consider.
Quick hits: More QB comebacks ... what are the Mets doing ... and more
- Philip Rivers inspired a few former NFL quarterbacks to consider their own returns, including Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III, who told FTW he can certainly still play.
- The Mets are down another player in free agency after Pete Alonso's departure for the Orioles. So, what exactly is the team's plan here? Our resident Mets fan Charles has the answer.
- Derik Queen looks like a star for the Pelicans, but that doesn't make New Orleans' draft-day trade to acquire him any less dumb, writes Bryan Kalbrosky.
- Philip Rivers was asked about his weight after five years away from football, and his response was too good.
