A coin that was forgotten for more than 75 years in a family collection has collected $6 million at auction .
On December 9, 2025 Stack’s Bowers Galleries auctioned a newly discovered 16th-known example of the legendary 1804 silver dollar —revered as the "King of American Coins."
The coin comes from the estate of New York collector James A. Stack, Sr., whose vast holdings were assembled in the 1930s and 1940s and later divided among his three children, with the intention that his grandchildren would benefit.
While large portions of the collection were sold between 1975 and 1995, one heir quietly retained their share, keeping a trove of rarities hidden from public view for decades. Among them was an 1804 dollar whose existence was unknown even to seasoned numismatists.
