TRAVERSE CITY— Traverse City commissioners are continuing discussions about the long-term future of the City Opera House as the historic venue faces growing maintenance needs. The 1893 building remains an important cultural anchor on Front Street, but its age has led to rising upkeep challenges that the city and the nonprofit operator must navigate together.

One of the most pressing issues involves the building’s condition, with routine maintenance no longer fully keeping pace with wear that has accumulated over decades. As part of its planning, the city has already set aside an estimated 160,000 dollars in its capital improvement plan for spring of 2026 to address an upcoming roof replacement, one of several major repairs expected in the coming years.
