John Swinney may have confidence in his under-fire Justice Secretary, but keeping the public on side is going to be the difficult task.

There have been questions over Ms Constance’s future for weeks as pressure ramped up over calls for a grooming gangs inquiry.

But this time, it’s really not looking good for the Justice Secretary.

Had she misrepresented Professor Alexis Jay during a Holyrood debate? That could have been argued in recent weeks, but now it’s unequivocal. The former chair of the UK’s Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse said so herself.

In September, Ms Constance told Holyrood that the professor “shares my view” that there was no need for further inquiries into child sex abuse.
