SALINA, Kan. (KAKE) – The City of Salina and Salina Animal Services are seeing an increase in cases involving Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in local geese.
Residents of Salina County are urged to exercise caution after multiple wildlife calls over the past week led to three suspected cases of HPAI. This comes amid growing detections of the virus across Kansas and the surrounding region, officials say.
HPAI is a severe viral disease that spreads quickly among birds and is often fatal. Recent cases handled by Salina Animal Services have shown classic symptoms, including:
Neurological impairment – lack of coordination, disorientation, inability to hold the head up, hunched posture, tremors, seizures, or twisted neck
