Every Major League Baseball team has to make some cold, calculated decisions at the end of the season for the health of the roster and/or payroll.

In November, the Yankees non-tendered a handful of disappointing pitchers from their bullpen, which was far below its usual standard this season. The most experienced of those pitchers was right-hander Mark Leiter Jr., who has six partial seasons of major league experience and was arbitration-eligible for the third and final time.

Following a season in which he put up a 4.84 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings, Leiter was left to explore free agency a year earlier than he would have if he'd performed up to the Yankees' preferred standard. But he appears to have landed on his feet.
