WASHINGTON — U.S. Sens. John Fetterman and Dave McCormick voted along party lines Thursday on a pair of competing proposals to stave off a fast-approaching spike in health care costs for millions of Americans.

Both measures failed, pushing the 102% average premium increase for Pennsylvanians who get their insurance through the Pennie marketplace closer to reality starting in January.

Mr. Fetterman — after spending six weeks earlier this fall disagreeing with his party’s tactic of shutting down the government over the issue — voted with all Democratic senators on a three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act enhanced premium tax credits before they expire at the end of this month.
