A Brooklyn man formally confessed to striking a 19-year-old woman with his car during an illegal street takeover on Long Island, an incident prosecutors say left the victim with multiple fractures.
Matthew Mitchell, 20, admitted in Suffolk County Court Thursday, Dec. 11, that he hit the woman while attempting a stunt in a Patchogue parking lot during a series of coordinated street takeovers across Suffolk and Nassau counties in October 2024.
Dozens of cars and spectators gathered at Gateway Plaza around 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 6, 2024, to watch drivers perform doughnuts, drifting, and other stunts, as Daily Voice reported.
Similar gatherings unfolded at several other locations that night, with many attendees recording and posting the dangerous maneuvers online.
One of those videos showed the 19-year-old victim standing in the lot as Mitchell attempted a maneuver in his white Infiniti. The side of the vehicle struck her, prosecutors said. Mitchell then fled the scene before police arrived.
The victim was taken to a hospital by a friend and treated for a fractured femur and pelvis, according to investigators.
Detectives used social media posts to identify witnesses and track down Mitchell. He was arrested in Brooklyn on Oct. 15, 2024, with help from the NYPD.
A review of his driving history revealed his license had been revoked and suspended six times on six separate dates, prosecutors said.
Mitchell pleaded guilty Thursday to assault, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, reckless endangerment, aggravated unlicensed operation, and reckless driving.
He is expected to be sentenced to two years in jail when he returns to court in January 2026.
District Attorney Raymond Tierney, who previously described Mitchell as a “wannabe racecar driver,” said the conviction sends a clear warning to those who take part in street takeovers.
“Street racing and stunt driving may seem like fun to participants, but, as this case demonstrates, the consequences can be devastating,” Tierney said. “Bystanders can easily be seriously injured or killed, and drivers will end up in prison for any harm they cause.”
