A grassroots effort to lower the speed limit along a heavily-trafficked County Durham road has been rejected.
Hundreds of locals in Durham City's Neville's Cross district put their names to a petition calling for a revised 30mph restriction on the A167 due to persistent concerns over road safety.
Residents have warned that the existing 40mph limit poses excessive danger to those on foot.
October 26 Abigail Eggleston, a 22 year old Durham University student, lost her life after being struck by a vehicle whilst crossing the A167 at Neville's Cross.
Delivering the petition at County Hall in Durham, Susan Walker, Chair of the City of Durham Parish Council, stated: "We ask you to help protect the people who call Neville's Cross home.
