In May of 1989 the future looked bright for Koreen Burrow. The then 24-year-old was thriving in her job as a lab technician in the neurology department at Ohio State University and working toward her master’s degree in molecular biology. She was also newly engaged to her boyfriend David Fox, a restaurant management consultant, and looking forward to married life.

That all changed one morning when Burrow woke up with numbness on her left side, from her leg all the way up through her torso and chest area. She had difficulty walking, and the following day the vision in her right eye began to darken.
