Experts are worried that one of the 384 North Atlantic right whales left in the world won't survive the winter.
According to a Dec. 8 Facebook post from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service, an aerial survey team from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spotted an entangled North Atlantic right whale near Jekyll Island, Ga.
"The whale was identified as right whale "Division" (#5217), a juvenile male born in 2022. He was last seen gear-free in July in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. The whale has several lines wrapping his head and mouth, including one cutting into his blowhole. The line also trails beyond the flukes," the NOAA Fisheries Service shared, along with several photos of the entangled whale.
