ATLANTA — Two juveniles were shot Thursday afternoon while trying to steal packages from a southwest Atlanta townhome, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.

He said officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to the 800 block of Celeste Lane in the Mays neighborhood, part of the Villages of Cascade complex, after reports of shots fired. The townhomes are just down the street from Benjamin E Mays High School.

A 15-year-old was shot in the foot. The second juvenile was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but police said late Thursday night he made it through surgery and is expected to survive.

Schierbaum said investigators determined the two juveniles were taking packages from a townhome when the homeowner came outside and opened fire.
