Visitors from an asteroid or extinct comet arrive in California skies this weekend. The Geminid meteor shower peaks Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13 and 14, according to the American Meteor Society , offering skywatchers stunning views of cosmic dust burning up when it hits Earth's atmosphere.

"The Geminids meteor shower is considered to be one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers," according to NASA .

It's actually Earth passing through a cloud of dust that, some astronomers say, produces the most spectacular meteor shower most years, even eclipsing the popular Perseids in summer. So we're the visitors.
