FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - An Indiana lawmaker is trying to pass a bill that would help reduce a statewide backlog of untested rape kits.

For sexual assault survivors, every day waiting for justice can feel like an eternity.

But right now, one Allen County prosecutor says some cases are stalled, not because they lack evidence but because testing that evidence can take months, even up to a year.

Indiana State Representative Becky Cash says as many as 600 to 800 rape kits are waiting to be tested in Indiana, leaving hundreds of victims of assault waiting for answers.

“When you’re talking about sexual assault, they can’t take those crimes to court until they have the forensics.” Rep. Cash.
