Sacramento County is opening a weather respite center Thursday afternoon at the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center as cold, damp conditions persist across the region.

In partnership with First Step Communities, the county will open the center at 4000 Branch Center Road at 2 p.m. The site will remain open continuously through 10 a.m. Dec. 15 with the possibility of extension if cold conditions continue.

Officials say the prolonged weather system, marked by overnight lows, minimal daytime warming and a damp fog layer, prompted the activation to provide a safe, warm space for those in need.

The respite center is open to adults ages 18 and older. Pets are welcome, with a limit of one per person or two per couple. Animals must be crated while inside the shelter and leashed
