PORTLAND, Ore. - Pertussis cases in Oregon have reached unprecedented levels, prompting state officials to urge residents to ensure vaccinations are current, especially for those pregnant or frequently around babies.

According to the Oregon Health Authority, the state has reported a record-breaking 1,475 cases of pertussis, surpassing the previous record set in 1950. The outbreak, which began in spring 2024, poses a significant threat, particularly to infants. Babies are at high risk for severe illness and hospitalization from pertussis. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends pregnant individuals receive a Tdap vaccine during their third trimester to protect their newborns.
