Attending the menorah lighting is not akin showing favouritism toward Israel, Farkas said.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas says he’ll attend next week’s menorah lighting at city hall — an annual event that celebrates the start of Hanukkah for the city’s Jewish community.

The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Calgary Municipal Building’s atrium. In addition to the lighting of candles, the event will include live music from Stephen Klevsky and cantor Rabbi Levi Matusof, school choirs, greetings from dignitaries and Jewish food including soup and latkes.

Premier Danielle Smith will also be among the dignitaries, according to a social media post from Chabad Lubavitch of Alberta, which organizes the event.
