LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The Michigan Senate has passed bipartisan legislation designed to protect domestic violence survivors by changing how personal protection orders are served to alleged abusers.
The legislation comes after the fatal shooting of Latricia Green, a Henry Ford Hospital employee. Police say the suspect was her ex-husband. There was a protection order in place, but it was never served. He was charged with murder in August.
Michigan is one of only seven states that require domestic violence survivors to serve personal protection orders to their own abusers. Priscilla Bordayo with ‘Crime Survivors Speak’ says this process puts victims at risk.
