NEEDHAM, Mass. —
For the 30,000 people running the Boston Marathon in April, life may be cold and uncomfortable for the next four months as they train for the big race.
Even marathon legend Dave McGillivray admits training isn't always easy. But he said it's more than worth it in the end.
"It's just a matter of sometimes a matter of forcing myself to get out the door," McGillivray said.
He's run 173 marathons, including 53 in Boston, and still sometimes needs to psych himself up to start running.
"My worst [weather] is cold, rainy, and wind in your face," McGillivray said.
At 71, the former race director averages about 30 miles a week, running every day, no matter the weather.
Between now and next April, McGillivray and other runners will gradually ramp up their weekly mileage.
